1:30 to 3:30 PM - North Carolina and the Civil War
In line with the Civil War's sesquicentennial observances, historians Gordon McKinney and Chris Hartley will describe the many ways North Carolina was involved in and affected by that conflict. McKinney will lead off with comments about the "inner Civil War" in NC, including how the war changed communities, social relations, gender roles, and economic development. Hartley will then take the floor to discuss the military side of the war in our state, especially Stoneman's Raid in 1865 and how it affected Western North Carolina. Following these presentations, there will be ample time for questions and comments from the audience.
3:30 to 5:00 PM - Self Publishing - Christine Kling
Self-publishing offers great new opportunities for both traditionally published authors and those yet unpublished. But there are a thousand ways to do it right – or go wrong. The first question this workshop will address is should you self-publish because depending on what and why you write, it may or may not be the right choice for you. If you do self publish, how do you market and what kind of money are we talking about? Do you need to hire a book formatter or editor? Should you use Smashwords or distribute your books directly to all the ebook stores like Kobo, Nook and the iBookstore. Should you also publish a paperback book? Do you need to get ISBN numbers, create your own publishing company or incorporate? Christine Kling, who has been traditionally published, self-published, and has now signed with Amazon's Thomas & Mercer, shares her experiences in the Indie revolution.
